Summer Insanity

Greetings all out there in the Land of Blog. It is I, Darth Bill, cruising the known and unknown universe in my brand-new-super cool- tricked out Death Star. I've seen a couple of movies this summer such as Iron Man, The Hulk and WALL-E. I enjoyed all these movies immensely. The two out now that I really want to see are Batman: The Dark Knight and Hellboy II. Coming out in August is the movie I am most looking forward to seeing.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Well, hopefully I'll get to see one of these these soon and I'll let you know what I thought. If you have seen something cool this summer you can also write in and let me and others know about it. Now let me tell you about some really cool graphic novels I have read recently:

Acredale Kolor Komics Kollection by Harold Buchholz - First I must sadly say that the PLCMC Library System does not as yet own this fantastic graphic novel written and drawn by Harold Buchholz. This graphic novel reminds of Charles Shultz's Peanuts with a heavy dosing of Warner Brother's type humor. The graphic novel is set in the town of Acredale where Miss Goodpenny's Home for Strays has a new border. That border is Apathy Cat and this cat has his own way of doing things and is a total original. This puts him on a collusion course with a Professor Straightlace who is the sort of teacher that thinks there is only one proper way for things to be done and hates originality. Apathy Cat and his friends don't want to hurt anyone and welcome all into their gang. Professor Straightlace sees them all as menaces to be put in their places. But never fear brave reader, with Apathy Cat at the wheel victory over conformity is assured. This really is a great graphic novel and if you are interested in learning more about it check out the website for Kids Love Comics. It is on there featured list of graphic novels and rightfully so. This is great stuff!!!!!!

Knights of The Lunch Table: The Dodgeball Chronicles by Frank Cammuso - Have you ever read any of the stories about King Arthur and The Knights of The Round Table? Well whether you have or not, I think you will find this graphic novel to be very clever and extremely funny. The main character in this graphic novel is Artie King (get it?). Artie and his family have just moved and Artie is starting school at Camelot (eh) Middle School. He makes new friends with Percy and Wayne, Hannibal a tarantula, and his science teacher, Mr. Merlyn (that's a familiar-sounding name). He also makes new enemies in Principal Dagger and big bad Joe, leader of the Horde (a bunch of bullies that terrorize all the kids at the school). The fun really starts when Artie is assigned the mythical locker at the school that no one else can open; no one, that is except Artie. This starts a series of events that leads to an epic dodgeball game where the winner literally takes all!!!! This is a great graphic novel, so do yourself a favor and check it out.

Marvel Adventures Hulk: Defenders by Paul Benjamin, David Nakayama and Mario Gully - The Hulk is back in this second volume of Marvel Adventures' Hulk graphic novels. This is Volume 2 in the series and collects issues 5 -8 of the comic book series. This Volume is even more action packed than Volume 1. In this graphic novel the Hulk teams up with such marvel heroes as Dr. Strange (Master of The Mystic Arts), The Sub-Mariner (also known as Prince Namor - Ruler of the undersea city of Atlantis), and The Silver Surfer (Master of the Power Cosmic). If that isn't enough to make you want to take a look at this fantastic book, the last story in the graphic novel has all these heroes, and let's not forget Rick Jones and Monkey, all teaming up together as The Defenders to fight the all-powerful Nameless One and his evil forces. Hulk is STRONGEST of them ALL!!!!!!!!!!

To Our Friend

Hi guys,

I guess you all heard the news about Carl's Mother. Carl is really a great guy and his family is super nice (I know you who already read this blog know this), so keep them in your thoughts. I know I will be keeping them in mine.

Well, I have read some really great Graphic Novels lately and wanted to share them with you. So take a look and see what you think about these:

The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck Companion by Don Rosa - As the title states this is a companion to Don Rosa's "Walt Disney's The

Life and Times of $crooge McDuck" (which I reviewed on my 2/18/08 post). This is really a terrific addition to the previous Graphic Novel in that it presents even more stories of Uncle $crooge's past. These stories are ripe with adventure, intrigue, comedy and much more. The tales are epic in scale and just a blast to read. Some of my favorite stories included "The Vigilante of Pizen Bluff" in whic h Uncle Scrooge teams up with famous old west figures such as Geronimo, Buffalo Bill, Annie Oakley and others against the notorious Dalton Boys; "The Cowboy Captain of the Cutty Sark" in which Cowpoke Uncle Scro oge serves aboard the famous Clipper Ship The Cutty Sark; and "The Dream of a Lifetime" in which the Beagle Boys have stolen a machine that allows them to enter Uncle Scrooge's dreams to find the combination of his safe. All the stories are fun and inventive and just plain fun to read. So give it a chance, I promise you will not be disappointed.

Amelia Rules! What Makes You Happy by Jimmy Gownley - Okay technically this books main character is a girl named Amelia McBride. So I know some of you out

there are going: "Bill, what are you doing talking about a book with a girl as the main character in the "Boys Rule Boys Read" Blog Site? Well all I can say is I'm doing it because it is a really cool Graphic Novel and does have some guys in it that really make it rule!!!!!!!! Amelia is a 4th grade spitfire, wise-cracking, tomboy whose parents have divorced and she and her Mom have relocated away from New York City. She makes knew friends and faces new challenges throughout this period in her life. Her friends include Reggie (er, I mean Captain Amazing), Rhonda, Pajamaman (really, a kid who spends every waking moment in PJ's), Sunday, Joan, Kyle (or should I say Ninja Kyle), her Aunt Tanner and of course her Mom and Dad. My favorite parts of this Graphic Novel are when Captain Amazing and G.A.S.P (Gathering of Awesome Super Pals) are taking on their dreaded arch-nemesis the Ninjas led by Ninja Kyle. This Graphic Novel is at times laugh out loud fun to very moving. I love this Graphic Novel and all the others in the series. So give it a shot and tell me what you think. Marvel Adventures Hulk: Misunderstood Monster by Paul Benjamin, David Nakayama and Juan Santacruz - It's the Hulk Baby!!!!!! He's mean, green and ready to cream anybody who messes with him. This Graphic Novel collects the first 4 issues of the comic. I have been a Hulk fan for a long time and the stories included are really great (lots of action and humor). The first story is the origin, naturally, of Bruce Banner becoming the Hulk. The Hulk has friends in Rick Jones, Monkey (who happens to be just that, a monkey) and sorta in Jamie Madrox, The Multiplying Man. He also has more than a few enemies such as General "Thunderbolt" Ross and his Hulkbusters and The Radioactive Man. This really is a fun read so check it out and see: "Hulk Smash!"

If you don't know how to post comments or reviews to our blog or if you want to read what we and other boys have written, here's what you do:

1. Every post has a place underneath it that says "Comments". Click on it and it will take you to a place in which you can write something. When you're done, click on a way to identify yourself. You don't have to create a Blogger/Google account (unless you already have one); you can click on "Name/URL" or even "Anonymous." Then click "Publish Your Comment." We try to get your comments and reviews posted right away, but sometimes we get busy with other duties. So, if you don't see your comment right away, don't panic. We'll post it soon.

Don't forget--any boy can get a free book the first time he writes a review. If you live too far away to come to the Myers Park library, go ahead and write to us anyway. We'll try to find a way to get a book to you. Besides, all the other boys out there would love to hear from you.

When you tell us about a book, please give the title, author, what the book is about, and why you did or didn't like it.

2. Blogs go "front to back"; that is, the newest post comes up first and the older ones are put further back. You click on the "Blog Archive" to read older articles. The posts for this month have the titles listed. You can click on other months to catch our other posts. (Our introduction is in June of 2007; if you're new to this blog, you might look it up.)

3. Underneath each post you'll see a line that says "Labels" and several other words such as "graphic novels" or "Andrew Clements." These extra words are links to a subject; for instance, if you clicked on "graphic novels," it would pull up all the posts about graphic novels. There's also a section below on some of our best posts on the most popular subjects

4. Did you notice that the posts from last year don't show up month by month as they did before this year? If you click on the triangle next to the previous years, the months will drop down and you can go back and see what we and your fellow readers have written.

The Iron Guy's Review Policy

1. Since the Iron Guy works for the terrific Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, I review only books that the library already has or will get soon.
2. If you are an author or publisher or agent and think you have a book that boys will go crazy over, please leave me a comment (with your email address so I can contact you) under any post. I will look and see if we have the book. If not, and if the book looks good, I will contact Those Who Order Books and see if CML would be interested. (Please note--CML does not usually order self-published books) PLEASE do not just send me a book! I appreciate the offer but but first I want to see if CML has it or will get it soon.
